Cake Tuesday: owls and orchids.

Wow - last week I was complaining about the heat and this week I'm in a wool hat and fleece jacket while I'm typing this. (Apparently ask and ye shall receive. Now I need to ask for mittens.)

I know I mentioned crows in conjunction with weddings recently; I just finished a cake that included owls.

The bride had created a totally adorable illustration of an owl bride and groom, and I reproduced it in sugar for the cake topper. The wedding was at Villa Viscaya - a gorgeous property on a bluff overlooking Monterey Bay (the house has private beach access). The couple was very low-key and relaxed, and everything was fresh and light in shades of white and spring green.

The cake was simple buttercream tiers, with sugar stems and fresh orchid blossoms in the wedding colors:

I love the simple tiers and bold flowers. Speaking of bold, one of my good friends just ran a FIFTY-mile race in eleven hours and change. She's AWESOME. AND she's deigning to ride with me this afternoon - we're going to head up into the mountains, through the redwoods, down to the coast, and back along the Pacific Ocean. I'm cutting out of work early - happy birthday to me!
