Cake Tuesday: fall colors.

It's drizzly and grey today - I want to dust off my winter boots and stash all my strappy summer sandals.

Autumn has always been my favorite season. I love the changing leaves, the crisp air, the anticipation of the holidays and cookie baking and cocoa drinking and sweater wearing. And this weekend included a cake for some other fans of the season, apparently:

Seasonal cakes can be tricky - moms often have fairly set ideas on what they'd like to see on their children's wedding days, and it usually includes several tiers and some sort of topper. And I ADORE tradition, and certainly had my something borrowed/something blue. (And a fairly traditional cake.) But if the day's meant to be a reflection of the two of you, shouldn't the cake be, too? Why NOT a giant squash?

The pumpkin itself was lots of layers of bittersweet chocolate cake with hazelnut filling, and the cornucopia was Meyer lemon poppyseed with lemon curd buttercream. The organic fruit was all sugared to make it a little more sparkly and festive. It might not be everyone's idea of a wedding cake, but really fun for me and the guests.

(Just WAIT til you see my snow couple this winter...)
