A+

I had seventeen vials of blood drawn today. When the technician finished, he seriously pumped his fist and cheered, "you're my new record!"

It is one THOUSAND degrees in Santa Cruz. (This might be a slight exaggeration. Whereas the seventeen vials, sadly, is not.) And we're soon headed to a spot that's around twenty degrees hotter than here. I'm feeling faint at the thought. (Or maybe that's the blood loss...)

We rented Dan in Real Life this week, which I hadn't been excited about in the theater with its mixed reviews, but it was great. And immediately called my friend Jodi (who has three daughters very close in ages to the movie daughters) to see if she'd seen it. She happened to be listening to the soundtrack when I called, so I guess that's a "yes". Steve Carell is wonderful, endearing, more complex than usual. Juliette Binoche starts out a little giggly and annoying (and I generally think she's lovely), but she becomes more interesting and enjoyable as the movie progresses. And the girls were perfect - all their scenes I've heard from Jodi's life, especially when the middle child falls to her knees and screams "YOU! ARE A MURDERER! OF LOVE!"

I don't remember being such a dramatic teenager. (Although my father might disagree... he loves to talk about how he didn't really see me between the ages of 12 and 18 except when I came out of my room to turn up the furnace or the air conditioning, depending on the season.)

In other news, yeay for California. It's sort of sad that the voters in this great state didn't support this, but how awesome that the Supreme Court could step in (finally) and make things right. I've done lots of cakes for gay couples, and it's always been sort of bittersweet. I know it will take awhile for all the details to be ironed out, but the validation of this basic civil right for everyone is tremendous.
